Holiday Party Entertainment Planning
Tips
Are you planning an annual conference, holiday meeting or
Christmas party? Would you like to have the best event ever? Live
entertainment may be just what you need to create a memorable
experience that people will talk about all year. Here are a few
ideas and tips to get you started...
Booking
Comedians or After-Dinner Shows
-Requires minimal staging and audio
-Performers can often "customize" the show for your audience
When shopping for corporate event comedy (which may include stand-up comedians,
humorous speakers, jugglers and magicians), it's important to find an act that's
both clean and experienced in front of corporate crowds. You're paying not just
for the show, but for peace of mind. After all, if the performer offends your
crowd, it makes you look bad!
Corporate performers typically cost more than "club" performers. The reason
is that clean, corporate comedy is much harder than a nightclub performance. You
have to have an act with wide appeal that won't offend anyone in the audience.
There are thousands of club performers across the country, but only a handful
that can do a clean, corporate show. You're not just paying for the jokes they
tell -- you're paying for the jokes they don't tell.
If the event is dinner and a show, then it's just a matter of working with
your entertainment advisor to choose a comedian, juggler or magician. You'll
need a stage or similar performing area and amplified sound (which the performer
or venue can often provide). A show lasting between 30 and 60 minutes is often
best, as guests start to become restless after that time.

Roving Acts
-Extremely interactive
-No production required
-Show takes place face-to-face
Roving entertainment (also known as strolling, roaming or close-up
entertainment) is ideal for warming up a crowd before a show, or for
entertaining mingling guests at a cocktail hour or trade show. This type of show
can usually be booked by itself or as an add-on to many entertainer's stage
shows. People love roving entertainment because the show takes place right
before their eyes, and sometimes even in their own hands!
Typically, magicians or jugglers charge for roving by the hour. The amount of
time you'll need depends on the crowd you expect. For example, if there's set
crowd of 100 people, then one hour of strolling entertainment is usually enough
to go table-to-table and entertain everyone. If it's a floating event where
people stream in and out then you can have the performer for as long as you
like!

Live Music
-Consider staging and sound production requirements
-Is this a show or background music?
Music is appropriate for almost all events, and is typically a first
consideration for entertainment. Music can help to reinforce the theme of your
event or establish a mood. To narrow down your list of entertainment options,
decide if you're looking for a "show" or just "background" music. Furthermore,
if you want a show, do you want or expect people to dance? Answers to these
questions will help lead you to the perfect musical accessory for your event.

General Considerations
-Will overnight lodging and travel be required?
-If so, are these included or on top of the quoted fee?
-Has the act played events similar to yours?
You often pay many times more for the meal than for the entertainer (on a per
person basis), when in fact the evening's program is probably far more important
than the meal. Consider the true value-per-person-attending when deciding on
your entertainment investment.
